We will discuss the QCD running coupling α_s, starting from its definition and meaning in the QCD's perturbative domain. We will then show how the definition of α_s can be extended into the nonperturbative domain. Such extension is not unique and we will focus on the extension based on the concept of effective charges. This particular extension is especially useful as it permits us to measure α_s in the non-perturbative domain, and to compute it in the Light-Cone Holographic QCD (LFHQCD) approach. We will briefly describe the calculation, compare its result to low energy α_s measurements, and discuss how this α_s from LFHQCD permits to determine the hadron mass spectrum using solely Λ_QCD as input. Finally, we will compare α_s from LFHQCD to other non-perturbative determinations of α_s.
