This talk for a popular audience is aimed at persons curious to advance science, making discoveries that will benefit humanity. I will survey several areas of science and engineering in which the IBS Center for Soft and Living Matter aims to lay the discovery framework to enable technological advances on the 5-15 year time scale. It involves interdisciplinary research which combines chemical synthesis, physical characterization, theory, and engineering. By the end of this talk you will understand that some of what you were taught in classes is wrong, you may be amazed at some of the crazy ways that grown men and women make a living, and you’ll be able to drop the phrase “single molecule resolution” in casual conversation.
