Description

In this study, we confirmed that the hydrogen storage capacity using composites of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and magnesium hydride (MgH2). In order to investigate the effects of MWNTs on hydrogen storage capacity of the composites, we produced composites with various weight ratios of MWNTs to MgH2. The hydrogen adsorption properties of the composites were measured using PCT (pressure-composition-temperature) equipment after pre-treatment process such as ball-milling and thermal treatment.
We showed that the hydrogen storage capacity of the composite with the MWNTs : MgH2 = 0.05 : 0.95 is approximately 2.1 wt% at 9atm and 350 °C. The hydrogen storage capacity of MWNTs alone is less than 0.02 wt% under any condition in this study. However, MWNTs can be an effective additive to MgH2 to improve their storage ability of hydrogen.
