Description

We studied the alpha and proton induced nuclear reactions on different targets to figure out the pros and cons in the production of different radionuclides via experimentally adopted method. We measured the production cross sections for proton induced reactions on natural copper (natCu), hafnium (natHf) and alpha induced reactions on natural copper (natCu), yttrium (89Y) in the energy range from their respective threshold to ~45 MeV.
We applied the stacked-foil activation and an off-line gamma-ray spectrometric technique at the MC-50 Cyclotron of the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences (KIRAMS), Korea. The proton and alpha energy loss or degradation at each foil in the stacked-foil was estimated by using the stopping and range of ions in matter (SRIM) program.
The gamma ray spectrometric system was the HPGe-detector (EG&G Ortec.) coupled with the 4096 multichannel analyzer (MCA) and associated electronics to determine the photopeak area of the gamma-ray of the nuclide of interest. The spectrum analysis was done using the program GammaVision 5.0 (EG&G Ortec). The beam intensity was determined by natCu(p,x)62,65Zn, natNi(p,x) 57Ni and natCu(alpha,x)66,67Ga, natCu(alpha,x)65Zn reactions in proton and alpha activation study respectively. The production cross-sections of 62,65Zn,  61,64Cu, 57Ni, 57,58,60Co from natCu(p,x) reaction, 173,175,176,177,178m,180gTa, 173,175,179m2,180mHf, 172g,173,177gLu from natHf(p,x) reaction, 66,67,68Ga, 62,63,65Zn, 61,64Cu, 58,60Co from natCu(alpha,x) reaction and 89g,m,90,91m,92mNb, 88,89Zr, 87g,m,88,90m,91mY from 89Y(alpha,x) reaction were investigated. The measured results were compared with the earlier reported experimental data and the theoretical data from TENDL library based on latest TALYS codes. The present experimental results will play an important role in enrichment of the literature data base for medical and industrial radioisotopes produced by proton and alpha-induced reactions.
