Description

In neutron-rich nuclei, the isospin asymmetry term (I 􏰅 􏰏N 􏰚 Z􏰔~A) has been re- ported to affect physical phenomena significantly. In this thesis we investigate the effects of the I2 term in the lifetime of the nuclear α-decay. The α decay half- lives in heavy nuclei are investigated by using simple cluster models including the square well (SW) and Woods-Saxon (WS) potential models which are modified by the isospin asymmetry term. Moreover, we suggest a model for the α potential based on the Skyrme force model. The empirical formula for α decay, the Viola-Seaborg formula, is also modified to include the isospin asymmetry effect. The lifetimes ob- tained in the model based on the Skyrme force model are found to be most consis- tent with the experimental data and we also confirm that the other models agree well with the data. Furthermore, the lifetime was more accurately calculated with the I2 term than excluding the I2 term. We also investigate the lifetimes of superheavy elements (SHE) through α decay with the theoretical mass formula developed in this work.
