Description

Gd3Al2Ga3O12:Ce3+ (GAGG) crystal was grown adopting Czochralski method at TPS. The crystal is cut into a size 8×8×8mm. The Ce has comparatively high effective Z-number (Zeff) and can have high level of X-ray absorption efficiency. The optical and scintillation properties such as X-ray emission, photoluminescence, transmittance, relative light yield, energy resolution, decay time and α/β ratio were analyzed. X-ray emission spectrum was observed in the range of 500~680 nm with a peak at 550 nm. The energy resolution of GAGG crystal, as for 137Cs 662 keV γ-ray, was estimated approximately at 11 %.
The decay time was for the γ-ray is 40 ns (57 %), 202 ns (43 %) and for α-ray is 129ns(73%),373ns(27%). The α/β ratio of GAGG to α particle from 241Am 5.41 MeV was about 0.18. The results of this study showed that GAGG crystal could be utilized in multiple radiation fields including medical radiation detection.
